House of the floodgates
(Casa de les Comportes)
The House of the floodgates (Casa de les Comportes) is the necessary infrastructure to regulate the flow of water from the Júcar river to the ditch. It was built in 1732 with the aim of placing the two floodgates inside, which, when raised, allowed the water of the Júcar river to pass to the Acequia Real del Júcar. In 1781, a third slightly larger gate was added and owned by the Duke of Híjar, who widened, deepened and rectified the old layout of the ditch, as well as reforming the dam and lengthening the ditch.
Inside, there is a plaque that informs that in 1835, the third reign of Isabel II and being General Mayor Mr. Antonio González Alborç, the solid work of the dam of the flows of the Community of Irrigators of the Acequia Real of Alzira was made. Currently, House of the floodgates was completely rebuilt respecting, as far as possible, the structure prior to the “riuà” of 1982.
In the upper part of the house there is a kind of gallery or viewpoint with a high pole where a flag was placed that served as a signal for the field workers to start and stop their work.
